A Rope Access Case Study: busbar replacement in Toronto

Rope access and high angle work on rope are established ways of conducting maintenance on high-rise buildings and other structures that have height or depth, but they are sometimes overlooked because key project and safety managers either do not know about them or do not understand how efficient, safe and cost effective they can be.

Busbar replacement in the Greater Toronto Area

Recently, Tundra has being supporting a client which imports, stores and distributes food, drink and other perishable products for onward sale in a very well-known supermarket chain and shops around Ontario.

One of their storage and distribution facilities has a extensive crane system which allows them to transport goods from one part of the facility to another, and as part of this system a series of busbars are installed into the roof of the facility where the crane is installed.

From time to time this system needs maintenance and in this case Tundra rope access technicians have been assisting with busbar replacement and busbar reinstallation at roof height.

Another factor in this situation is that facility has both chilled and freezer rooms making cold a health and safety factor in any work which is completed there.

A success story and amazing value

This task is a perfect example of how rope access can lead to project success. Tundra’s technicians have been able to replace the busbars – this type of work did not need a certified electrician, although we could have provided one – without the need for scaffolding and without significant disruption to the customer’s and facilities work flow.

Previously getting this work done has caused the customer substantial operational disruption.

We are also led to understand that we were able to complete the work for about 15% of the cost that the customer had previously had to pay, including loss of income during necessary shutdown time.  That’s not a typo. This wasn’t a 15% saving, but actually 15% of the previous cost to do the same work.

Overall, a big success for the customer, Tundra and a real-life case study of how rope access can deliver a safe, effective and efficient solution to a real-world industrial maintenance problem.
